General Assembly Oct. 20th Minutes

 

  • Chelsea reads a letter of support to our New York counterpart

  • Get Chelsea’s notes from letter of support

  • Comments that we are doing a great job, concern about this movement as a whole, fighting corporate greed, unsure what we mean by “corporate greed”. Exploitation of humans is our main concern, not corporate greed. Greater definition for the terms that we use regularly.

    • main point: rather than fight corporate greed, we fight the capitalist system, met with agreement

  • Chelsea: Should have said that someone from sask will deliver letter personally, should we sign theirs, draft our own?

  • Going over hand symbols that we use,

    • Finger waves up = agreement

    • Finger waves down = Disagreement

    • Two hands out = Stop

    • Crossed Arms = Block

    • Rolling hands = (taking too long to get point across)

    • Time out = Relevant point to add to the conversation

Group Updates:

  • invite people who attend various universities to meet with U of A group for networking, communication and planning and to address the issue of student participation. John Garcon from NAIT said he will work on his campus

  • Also trying to outreach to faculty members and workers at campuses

  • This Wednesday at 3:30 at U o A amenity center, round table, 4 members from faculty, as well as outreach members about the occupation movements and relation to history (egypt, present times), encouraging people from Edmonton occupy camp to come out and participate

  • suggested action terms update: 3 things propose

    • on 24, opening day of fall leg sitting, we do something, not sure what yet.

    • Propose that right after G.A we have a brainstorm

    • Call out for day of action on Oct 29, around robin-hood tax, do we want to organize a movement for that day. Sign up list for those interested

    • We should plan an event for Nov 5

  • Darrel Katz is coming to city hall on the 25 to present proposal (taxpayers pay for arena)

    • Open house on Oct 25 at city hall, 9am., encourage participation

    • Must register ahead of time, 50 people already registered, great start

    • wants 125 million from city, other cities all built their own a

  • Occupy Wall street sent out declaration to New York city to send to city officials, describing what they are protesting. We should do the same. Met with agreement

  • Message that people can’t hear the mic, speak up

  • mentioned that 1=888 numbers are up to report illegal immigrants for deportation, we should call them to hold up the lines

  • Media tent is being set up with relevant videos for protesters to watch

  • Chelsea: Small arts update: drummers this evening from treaty 6, was great to see, would like to see others do the same to start off our G.A’s. Would like to thank them

Proposals

  • Didn’t expect to come, but inspired by us, watched us on youstream last night, had a vision, one mantra came to mind, we should come up with a mantra together, other cities have, would be cool for people walking by to see our musicians performing a “unified mantra’

  • We should throw some kind of a party, One real spirit lifter, poetry, (others agree), likes hip-hop poetry, Dwennimen, Buzz Rock are coming, we will probably need additional security for the event.

    • Wants to possibly get donations going for the event

    • Chad is going to help with sanitation

    • Hopefully we can get more first aiders and security

    • Also need a generator, sound gear

    • Need about $100 to throw the party

    • Will help keep the momentum going, help build morale/unity

    • Performers will draw more of the public

    • Kitchen concerns: Yes we are giving free food, but do we want to give it to everyone. IF yes, we will need more donations do we want to give food to everyone who comes? will need more donations if so

    • regarding donations; not sure what happening, brings food when she can, wondering about comments about feeding people off the streets, nice cause, but we aren’t really a charity. Maybe shut down kitchen for a bit tomorrow

    • Chelsea: take some time to think about it and take stock of our supplies, readdress issue when we have a more thorough report.

    • How do we differentiate between protesters and public, might further divide regulars from visitors

    • No power, only a $50 investment for an acoustic show

      • Generators are very noisy

    • Vote on amount of money to be spent on party (anything over $100 need a vote)

  • Any Thoughts on Food For Party?

    • only munchies and coffee stuff, just not any meals

  • Chelsea: got a call from inews880, in early evening, asked for comment about being banned from camp, (a journalist), as far as we understand, unless we vote to ban someone, no one has the authority to make that decision, propose to outreach the journalist and bring her back, no hard feelings, totally welcome (met with agreement)

  • Looking for more spokespeople, willing to train on key issues and messages

  • Spokespeople need updates to accurately report to the media

  • Non-spokespeople should talk to reporters on an individual basis (about personal reasons for participation), not about as our cause as a whole

  • The days are long, only one G.A in the evening, should we have another G.A during the day? Discuss issues, politics, what we want, why we are here, what kind of a world we want to create. We need to discuss among ourselves, debate is good, we need some clear demands about what we want (free education from cradle to grave) (met with agreement) (states his beliefs)

  • Chelsea update: Sounds like a bullhorn and generator was removed by someone we don’t know, possible they actually were his, not entirely sure. Taken from first aid tent, don’t blame first aiders/security, we are all responsible for our own safety, please be safe and respectful, make life easier for all of us. Everyone has a role, thank you.

  • Marshall doesn’t like the name marshal, their duties are safe walks, deescalation, general assistance, not specifically security. change from marshal to concierge (met with agreement)

  • Need more female representation during G.A

  • Another suggestion that we need to figure out our specific goals, wants to form a group to figure these issues out (reiterates declaration of occupation)

  • Designed a survey that outlines a proposal, what would you like to change, why do you want to change them, how can you change them. Good method to organize our G.A’s. (met with agreement, no disagreement)

  • Concern about party, sleeping, children, if it is too big it might cause problems at our camp, hold it at Winston Churchill, impose party curfew?

  • First timer: wanted to see if we are expecting more people tomorrow, we should hold an info session for the public (met with agreement)

  • Weren’t able to set up credit union 179 in donations today $1600 so far

  • Chelsea: Womens caucus to discuss female safety issues

    • Find a system for usable tents (has been approached by people looking for a place to sleep, safety?)

  • Petty Cash – Held by kitchen, receipts are collected at end of night, with receipts of what they spent.

  • Use some of our money to buy food (anything over $100 needs approval)

  • Prop: we have consistent/regular G.A times scheduled (6:30 weekdays (met with agreement)

  • Working group and G.A on weekends, Working group @ noon, 6:30 for G.A
